Every four years, global attention shifts to “the beautiful game”. The World Cup is a sporting event like no other, one which thrives off the accessibility and ubiquitous nature of football. Diehards and casual fans alike file into stadiums, city squares, pubs, cafes, and living rooms to cheer on their home or newly adopted nations. Moments of magic on the pitch transcend both the boundaries of country and shackles of language. There is a camaraderie in the collective experience of a jaw-dropping golazo, a perfect first touch or the unbearable tension of a match decided by penalties. The players themselves carry the weight of millions who share in the suffering and adulation of both heartbreak and glory. It may be war on the pitch, but ultimately one that yields the best in humanity.
Our studio was no exception to the enchantment of the 2018 World Cup. As we counted down the days to kick-off, lines were drawn, dividing rooting interests and paving the way for some good-natured smack talk. When the games commenced the air was filled collective “ooh’s and aah’s”, screams and perhaps a few stray expletives. We quickly realized we needed to channel our obsession into a creative outlet. The solution was to commemorate the event with a design for each of the 32 teams and then create a custom Selman WC18 ball.
We figured after going through all the work to make an official ball (and the minimum order count that took up most of the studio storage space) we might as well make a booklet to go with it. Each country's page contains the 2018 roster, along with statistics and acolades from the tournament. This ended up being a perfect end of year gift for our clients and friends, as well as generating a bit of buzz that landed us our first gig with Charity Ball.
